At least five people were wounded last night in a shooting on a beach in Los Angeles in the United States, not far from the place where an action to voluntarily surrender personal weapons organized by the police and city authorities was held earlier, the Associated Press reported.

A police spokesman said law enforcement officers responded to a report of a shooting at Royal Palms Beach in the San Pedro area around 6 p.m. yesterday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Emergency crews transported four victims with gunshot wounds to local hospitals.

Later, a fifth injured and was taken to a clinic by a friend.

Some of the injured are in critical condition, the police said.

A suspect fled the scene in a car, but no arrests were made last night.

The handgun-for-vouchers drive was in Wilmington.

At least 45 weapons were handed over.

Authorities issued a statement saying it was a tragic irony that the shooting should have occurred not far from a place where weapons were voluntarily surrendered, BTA said.
