A demographic crisis

is unfolding in the Russian Federation

.

Over the past three years, the country has lost about 2 million more people than usual to war, disease and mass emigration.

The Economist writes about it.

The population peak in Russia was observed in 1994 and amounted to 149 million people.

By the beginning of 2021, the population was already 145 million people.

And in recent years, it has decreased even more: first because of the coronavirus pandemic, and then because of Putin's war against Ukraine.

The publication notes that the life expectancy of Russian men has decreased by almost five years, to the same level as in Haiti.

According to the State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation, in 2020 and 2021 the population of the country decreased by 1.3 million, and the death rate exceeded the birth rate by 1.7 million. The decrease was the largest among ethnic Russians, whose number, according to the 2021 census, decreased by 5.4 million in 2010-21.

Their share of the population fell from 78% to 72%.

The publication indicates that if we take into account deaths from the coronavirus, Russians who died in the war and those who fled the country due to mobilization, it turns out that in 2020-23 Russia lost from 1.9 to 2.8 million people in addition to its usual demographic deterioration.

By the way, it amounted to approximately 1.3 million people in 2020-2021.

The population of Russia may decrease to 130 million people by the middle of the century.

"The demographic catastrophic loop did not reduce Putin's desire for conquests. But it makes Russia a smaller, less educated and poorer country, from which young people are fleeing and where men die at the age of 60. The invasion became a human catastrophe and not only for Ukrainians," the researchers emphasized .

We will remind you that Bloomberg wrote that

Putin's war and mobilization will lead to the largest demographic crisis in Russia.
