For two decades, scientists have been researching healthy habits in midlife that reduce the risk of

dementia

.

The study will be presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Boston.

The Independent writes about it.

The study included 13,720 female participants with an average age of 54.

"The good news is that healthy lifestyle choices in middle age can reduce the risk of dementia later in life," the researchers say.

How you can reduce your risk of dementia:

  • physical activity;

  • healthy food;

  • do not smoke;

  • drink less alcohol;

  • control of emotions and psychological health;

  • annual medical examination.

Dementia is a syndrome of persistent impairment of cognitive functions due to organic damage to the brain, causes impairment of abstract thinking, and provokes the loss of the ability to think critically.

The frequency of dementia increases with age: from 2% - under the age of 65, to 20% - in people 80 years and older.
