According to the law, the head of state can decide to resume Russia's participation in the agreement.

The law enters into force from the day of its official publication.

Putin

announced the decision to suspend Russia's participation in the treaty

last week in a message to the Federal Assembly.

The very next day, February 22, the relevant bill was unanimously adopted by the State Duma and approved by the Federation Council.

Justifying his decision, Putin claimed that "the Western elites do not hide the goal of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia, ending it once and for all."

"They also want to inspect our defense facilities.

In the current conditions of today's confrontation, it sounds like some kind of delusion," Putin emphasized.

US President

Joe Biden

called the Russian president's decision on DSNU "a big mistake".

At that moment, Biden was on a visit to Poland.

Earlier, US Secretary of State

Anthony Blinken

described Putin's move as "unfortunate and irresponsible".

According to Blinken, the US will monitor Russia's real actions in this area and is always ready to return to arms limitation negotiations.

  • The NPT, also known as NPT-3 or New START, was concluded between the US and Russia in 2010 and was supposed to be valid until 2025 after an extension.

It establishes, in particular, the limits of the strategic nuclear arsenals of the two countries, prohibits the countries from placing strategic nuclear weapons outside their territories, obliges them not to hide nuclear missiles from intelligence and to give access to each other's inspectors to the bases with nuclear weapons.
