AFAD Administrator Yunus Sezer said the quake caused more than 20 buildings to collapse, the Associated Press reported.

Mehmet Cinar, mayor of Yesilyurt, told HaberTurk TV that a father and daughter entered the damaged building to collect belongings and were trapped under the rubble of the four-story building after the earthquake.

Elsewhere in Malatya province, rescue teams were searching under the rubble of other buildings, according to HaberTurk.

On February 6, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit southern Turkey and parts of northern Syria. Eleven provinces in Turkey were affected, including Malatya.

The earthquake killed more than 48,000 people in the two countries, and 173,000 buildings in Turkey collapsed or were seriously damaged.

AFAD urged people not to enter damaged buildings, noting that strong aftershocks continued to pose a risk.

Since February 6, nearly 10,000 aftershocks have occurred in areas affected by the century-old quake.
