Peru recalled its ambassador to Mexico indefinitely.

This happened after the president of Mexico declared that Peru's government was unconstitutional, the BBC informed.

According to Andrés Manuel López Obrador, former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo was illegally ousted.

Peru's current leader, Dina Bolwarte, condemned the claim, calling it unacceptable interference in internal affairs.

According to her, the remarks will seriously affect the relations between the nations.

The ouster of Pedro Castillo in December sparked mass protests that continue across the country and have left at least 50 dead.

The 53-year-old former head of state is jailed on sedition and conspiracy charges after he unsuccessfully tried to dissolve Congress to stop a vote to impeach him.

Dina Bularte, who was Castillo's vice president, has so far resisted repeated calls from protesters to step down and make way for constitutional reform.

During her speech, she accused her Mexican counterpart of supporting Castillo's coup attempt.

López decided to seriously affect the two-hundred-year-old relationship of mutual respect, friendship, cooperation and desire for integration that historically unites Peru and Mexico, Bularte pointed out.

The ambassador's recall comes two months after Mexico's ambassador to Peru was expelled after Mexico granted political asylum to Castillo's family.

Obrador is not the only regional leader to criticize Castillo's removal.

Bolivia, Argentina and Colombia also called on Peru to reinstate him.
