"The United States will apply significant sanctions against key industries that are a source of income for Vladimir Putin," White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said.

The topic will be discussed at the online summit of the G-7 leaders tomorrow, which will also be attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

"The leaders will discuss how we can continue to support Ukraine," the spokeswoman added, but did not go into details about whether the G-7 partners would also join the new American sanctions.

Among the specific targets of the sanctions are banks and companies that allow Moscow to circumvent the wave of sanctions already imposed on it.

The White House spokeswoman clarified that the US will also target Russia's defense industry, as well as players in third countries that try to circumvent sanctions.

She added that the US will also announce new economic aid to Ukraine in the areas of defense and energy, which will help Ukrainians continue to defend themselves against Russian aggression, while helping the Ukrainian state provide basic services to its population, such as electricity and heating.
