Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said today that the island's military ties with the United States will be strengthened to stop "authoritarian expansionism", reported AFP.

Taiwan and the US will continue to boost military exchanges, she assured after a meeting with US congressmen in Taipei.

Tsai pointed out that Taiwan will cooperate even more actively with the US and other democratic partner countries to respond to "international challenges such as authoritarian expansionism and climate change".

The Taiwanese president did not specify what this future exchange would entail.

The five-day visit by US congressmen was preceded by a visit late last week by a senior US Defense Department official in charge of relations with China.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any formal contact between the island and other democratic countries.

In recent years, a number of official visits by US representatives there have angered China, notes AFP.
