On January 20, US President Joe Biden made an unannounced visit to the capital of Ukraine on the eve of the anniversary of the Russian invasion.

He announced in Kiev about new deliveries of American "critical equipment", including artillery ammunition, anti-tank systems and air defense equipment, as well as sanctions against the Russian elite and companies that try to evade existing sanctions or support the Russian defense industry.

During Biden's visit to Kyiv, an air alert was declared throughout Ukraine after Russia launched a fighter jet with missiles from an airfield in Belarus.

"We informed Russia that President Biden would go to Kyiv a few hours before his departure in order to avoid a conflict situation," said Biden's security adviser Jake Sullivan,
