Mythological Stories Of Holi

Story of Hiranyakashipu, Prahlad and Holika

According to mythology, there was a king named Hiranyakashyap whose son was Prahlad.

While Hiranyakashyap was strongly against Vishnu, his son Prahlad was a devotee of Vishnu and due to this he did not like his father's eyes at all.

Hiranyakashyam was such a king who was blessed with many boons and no one can kill him day or night, neither outside the house nor inside the house, neither man nor any demon, nor creature nor any deity.

Due to this he became arrogant.

Due to Prahlad being a devotee of Vishnu, Hiranyakashyap tried his best to kill Prahlad.

However, Lord Vishnu used to save Prahlad's life every time.

Once Hiranyakashyar called his sister Holika to kill his son Prahlad.

Holika had a boon that fire could not even touch her, that is, when Holika would sit with Prahlad in a pile of burning wood, Prahlad would burn to death and Holika would escape.

However, the fire could not even touch Prahlad who was blessed by Lord Vishnu.

Holika sitting with Prahlad in the fire turned to ashes and Prahlad was saved.

This day is considered the victory of good over evil and for this reason Holika Dahan is done every year.

However, after this the pitcher of Hiranyakashyap's sins also got filled and Lord Vishnu killed Hiranyakashyap by taking the form of Narasimha.

Another mythological story related to Holi is the story of Kamdev.

According to this legend, centuries ago, after the death of Sati, Lord Shiva was in grief.

Bholenath was deeply upset due to which the whole world was getting affected.

After this, Sati took birth as Mother Parvati and started trying to generate love in the mind of Lord Shiva.

Mother Parvati sought help from Kaamdev to get success.

Knowing the consequences, Kamadeva shot the arrow of love in Lord Shiva's heart, which disturbed Lord Shiva's attention, and opening his third eye with anger, he consumed Kamadeva.

But, the arrow of love had done its work and once again Lord Shiva started focusing on the affairs of the world.

Holika Dahan is considered to be the beginning of Kamdev's burning like this.

Especially in South India, the story of Kamdev is considered correct and he is worshiped on Holi.

Radha-Krishna story

This story of Radha-Krishna (Radha-Krishna Story) is believed to be behind playing Holi of colors and Holi of flowers on Holi.

According to belief, a demon had tried to kill Shri Krishna by feeding him milk in his childhood.

Shri Krishna's life was saved but the color of his body turned blue because of this.

Radha Rani was fair since childhood and because of this she used to tease Shri Krishna.

That's why Shri Krishna painted Radha Rani in different colors to make her look like him.

Both lovingly started playing Holi with colors every year in the memory of this day in the month of Phalgun and according to belief, that is why gulal is used on Holi and Holi is played.

There is a story of Radha-Krishna behind playing Holi of flowers.

It is said that once Shri Krishna went somewhere far away, Radha Rani became sad and nature was also affected by her sadness, due to which flowers and trees and plants started withering everywhere.

When Shri Krishna returned, Radha Rani's heart became happy and all the flowers bloomed once again.

After this, Shri Krishna threw flowers at Radha Rani while teasing her, then the gopis also started doing the same.

Since then, Holi of flowers started being played.
