Heavy rains and mudslides in Brazil have killed a 7-year-old girl and a young woman in northern Sao Paulo state, with more victims feared, the Associated Press reported, citing Brazilian authorities.

The cities of Sao Sebastiao and Bertioga have canceled their planned carnivals.

The child died in the city of Ubatuba, located about 220 kilometers north of Sao Paulo.

The mayor of the neighboring city of Sao Sebastiao said a 35-year-old woman had died after being hit by a tree.

He added that many people were still under the rubble of their destroyed homes.

According to information from the authorities in the state of Sao Paulo, in one day the rainfall in the region exceeded 600 millimeters, which is unusually high for Brazil in such a short period. 

Televisions broadcast footage of flooded houses with only the roofs visible.

Locals use small boats to carry objects and people to higher ground.

The road that connects Rio de Janeiro to the port city of Santos has been blocked by landslides and floods.
