A couple from the Canadian city of Prince George, province of British Columbia, played the lottery and hit

the jackpot

, but remained without winnings due to their lack of haste.

This is reported by The Mirror.

Dan and Cerise Lewis were tidying up their bedroom when they saw a box of Christmas leftovers.

Among the things, the couple discovered an instant lottery ticket.

Dan checked the ticket again and found that Cerise had erased all three symbols.

This meant that they won a prize of $100,000.

However, their joy was short-lived.

The woman used her mobile phone to check the ticket through the lottery app and found out that it had expired five days ago.

Not losing hope, the couple called the lottery headquarters to find out if they had a chance to win.

They explained the situation and specified the amount of the prize due to them.

The operator asked them to wait and then informed them that once the ticket expired there was nothing that could be done.

The couple rechecked the ticket at the shop, but it again came up with an expired date.

"We saw that we had won $100,000 and thought that we would be able to solve all our problems and get out of debt. But in a few minutes we found out that we won nothing," the woman complained.

It will be recalled that a resident of the British town of Keatley, West Yorkshire county, hit

the jackpot.

However, later after that he was put on trial for stealing sneakers.
