The fitness of conscripts, conscripts and conscripts for military service is determined by the Military Medical Commission (MHC), which every conscript must pass.  

It is the military hospital commission that decides whether a person is fit to fight and perform combat tasks. 

The VLK can recognize a conscript:

  • Suitable for military service.

  • Temporarily unfit for military service.

  • Limited to unfit for military service

  • Ineligible for military service with exclusion from military registration. 

The list of diseases exempting from mobilization and military service is given in Appendix 1 of the Regulations on Military Medical Examination in the Armed Forces of Ukraine 

Diseases of the spine, which exempt from mobilization

  • Diseases of the spine (dorsopathy) and their consequences M40-M54.

  • Kyphosis and lordosis, scoliosis, osteochondrosis of the spine.

  • Spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, lesions of intervertebral discs, other dorsopathies.

  • Injuries of spine, spinal cord, blood vessels, nerve plexuses and peripheral nerves S22, S24, S25, S32.

  • Spinal fractures at any level.

  • Fracture of a vertebra, vertebral arch, spinous process, transverse process, dislocation, subluxation of a vertebra, rupture of an intervertebral disc.

  • Rupture, compression, shock, swelling and hemorrhage of the spinal cord.

  • Progressive tuberculosis of the spine, bones and joints, accompanied by dysfunction, paresis, paralysis, as well as overflowing abscesses and fistulas.

  • Active limited tuberculosis of the spine, bones and joints, genitourinary organs, other extrapulmonary localization in the fading stage without overflowing abscesses and fistulas.

  • Deforming spondylosis and intervertebral osteochondrosis of the cervical spine, accompanied by functional instability of II-III stages (displacement of vertebral bodies more than 3 mm during functional tests) and vertebrobasilar insufficiency.

  • Deforming spondylosis and intervertebral osteochondrosis of the thoracic and lumbar spine, accompanied by deep para- and tetraparesis with sphincter function disorders, with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis syndrome, as well as poliomyelitis, caudal, vascular, compression, severe pain syndrome and statocoordinator disorders after a long (at least three months) of inpatient treatment without a stable clinical effect.

  • Fixed curvatures of the spine (kyphosis, scoliosis of the IV degree) with a sharp deformation of the chest (costal hump, etc.) and a significant violation of the external breathing function of the III degree according to the restrictive type.

Severe forms of arthritis that affect the musculoskeletal system of a person are released from mobilization: 

  • Severe forms of arthritis and arthrosis, Felty's syndrome, rheumatoid vasculitis, Still's disease, rheumatoid bursitis, psoriatic and enteropathic arthropathies.

  • Juvenile arthritis, gout, Sjogren's gout, Behcet's disease, diffuse eosinophilic fasciitis, causing significant dysfunction of the damaged organs.

Citizens with a severe form of acquired deformities and defects of the fingers, feet, limbs, severe flat feet, fibroblastic disorders that cause

severe violations of motor functions will not be called up. 

Citizens with amputated limbs up to a certain level will also not be allowed to join the army.

If a person has significant disorders of the spine, severe forms of the listed diseases, he is recognized as unfit for military service, if moderate - he may be recognized as fit or temporarily unfit for service.
