The BJP initially tried to forge an alliance with Tipra Motha.

New Delhi:

Voting is going on in Tripura today in a triangular contest.

The ruling BJP is expecting a big victory.

On the other hand, CPM has unexpectedly joined hands with Congress.

In case of a hung house, the new party Tipra Motha will have all the cards.

Important information related to the case:

  • For more than 30 years, Tripura was ruled by the CPM.

In 2018, BJP created history by reversing.

BJP won 36 out of 60 seats in the state.

Earlier, the BJP had practically no presence here.

  • However, in the 2018 elections, the BJP was pushed well above the majority mark of 31 by the people.

The BJP entered into an alliance with the regional IPFT (Indigenous Progressive Front of Tripura) and also got eight seats.

  • The CPM, which ruled Tripura for 35 years, has entered into an alliance with the Congress this time and the election campaign is being led by four-time Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

The Left Front is contesting on 47 out of 60 seats in the state, while the Congress is contesting only on 13 seats.

  • CPM had won 16 seats in 2018.

Congress did not get even a single seat.

Congress was the main opposition party in the last assembly.

The CPM hopes their alliance will help it add votes to around 13 seats, but the alliance has raised eyebrows among the Kerala units of the two parties, where they have been arch-enemies for decades.

  • Former royal Pradyot Kishore Debbarma with a key demand of Greater Tipperaland, the new party Tipra Motha may create trouble for the BJP.

Along with the BJP is the local party IPFT, but it has lost its hold on some seats in the last five years.

In 2021, the IPFT was wiped out in the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections.

In this assembly election, IPFT had to accept only five seats to contest.

  • The BJP initially attempted to forge a rapprochement with Tipra Motha, but its efforts suffered a setback when the BJP announced that it would not allow the division of Tripura.

Tipra Motha has taken a tough stand after Union Minister Amit Shah accused Tipra Motha of being the "B team of CPM-Congress".

  • Debbarma said, "BJP is a B-team in Nagaland. In Meghalaya, Shillong and Garo Hills, they are B-team of some other party. You are B-team of some other party in Mizoram. In Tamil Nadu you are B-team of AIADMK." -Team. In Punjab, you are the B-Team of Akali Dal. BJP is the B-Team of many parties in India. Tipra Motha is contesting on 42 seats.

  • BJP's Northeast chief and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has predicted a very good performance for the party in all the three northeastern states that will be held in this phase.

  • Himanta Biswa Sarma, in an exclusive interview with NDTV, said, "In Meghalaya, the BJP will emerge as a more significant political force. In Tripura, we will retain power with a large majority and in Nagaland, we will again form the government with the NDPP."

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has predicted a "tsunami" in favor of the BJP.

  • Elections are to be held in Meghalaya and Nagaland on 27 February.

The counting of votes will take place on March 2.
