The earthquake in Turkey and Syria 398

According to him, this is the worst earthquake in the modern history of Turkey.

The devastating Erzincan earthquake of 1939 claimed the lives of around 33,000 people.

The Turkish president was speaking after a five-hour cabinet meeting held at the headquarters of the Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD).

Erdogan said 105,505 were injured in the tremors.

A total of 13,208 injured are still being treated in hospital after last week's earthquakes, he added.

The head of state said that the rescue work will continue until the last person is taken out from under the collapsed buildings.

According to him, about 250,000 employees are on the ground in the earthquake zones.

He noted that any country would face the problems that "we faced" in such a natural disaster, the power of which he compared to atomic bombs.

Erdogan said the collapsed buildings reminded the government of the need for stricter building regulations.

According to him, more than 2.2 million people have left the areas affected by the earthquakes.

A total of 9,046 foreign workers from 82 countries are currently working in the disaster zone, Turkey's foreign ministry said.

The agency added that 100 countries have offered help so far, with two more expected to send rescue teams.

In addition to rescue teams, blankets, tents, food and psychological support teams, along with more than 12,300 vehicles, including excavators, tractors and bulldozers, have been sent to the affected areas.

Over 227,762 tents, 2,607,390 blankets and 48,271 containers have been sent to the 10 most affected counties, AFAD said.

DPS provided 650 tents and 5,000 camping beds for the distressed people in Turkey

The February 6 earthquakes, measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale, severely affected ten counties in southern and southeastern Turkey, as well as neighboring Syria.
