Moldova has temporarily closed its airspace, the national airline of the small Eastern European country said, as quoted by Reuters.

"Dear passengers, at this moment the airspace of the Republic of Moldova is closed. We expect the resumption of flights," Air Moldova announced on Facebook.

The announcement comes at a time of tension between the former Soviet republic and Russia, amid the war in Ukraine.

Today, Russia rejected accusations by the president of Moldova that Moscow plans to destabilize the former Soviet republic, reports "Reuters".

Moldovan head of state Maya Sandu said yesterday that Russia intends to use foreign saboteurs to topple her tiny country's rulers, prevent it from joining the European Union and use it in the war against Ukraine.

Sandu, whose country borders Ukraine, has repeatedly expressed concern about Russia's intentions and the presence of Russian troops in the breakaway Transnistrian region.

For his part, on February 2, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the West is considering using Moldova in the role of a "new Ukraine".

He noted that Sandu wants Moldova to join NATO and is ready to unite the country with Romania.

According to him, Moldova is one of the countries that the West "wants to turn into the next anti-Russian center".
