On Sunday, February 12, the second round of presidential elections took place in Cyprus.

It was won by the former head of the country's Foreign Ministry, conservative Nikos Christodoulidis.

He received 51.9% of the vote.

The turnout was 72.2%.

This is reported by Euronews.

Christodoulidis' opponent was the former representative of Cyprus to the UN, Andreas Mavroyanis, who is supported by left forces.

He admitted his defeat.

The 49-year-old new president will hold the highest public office for the next five years and will become the eighth president of Cyprus.

Christodoulidis ran for the presidency as an independent candidate, winning the support of the centrist and pro-Hellenic Democratic Party, the Movement for Social Democracy, the Democratic Front party, and the Solidarity movement.

Earlier we reported that Cyprus froze bank deposits of Russians worth 105 million euros, which were sanctioned due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But the names of these citizens of the Russian Federation are not disclosed in the Ministry of Finance of Cyprus.

TSN.ua also informed that in the spring of last year, the US government asked Cyprus to provide Ukraine with Soviet equipment from its stockpile, in particular, T-80U tanks.

Cyprus said it agreed to the deliveries, but instead expressed a desire to receive Leopard 2 tanks.
