[Reporter Lu Yixuan/Taipei Report] South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that Chung Byung-won, the former South Korean representative to Taiwan, has been transferred to be the ambassador to Sweden.

It is understood that Zheng Bingyuan resigned last week, and the new representative in Taiwan will be Lee Eun-ho, director of the Strategic Material Management Institute (KOSTI).

Three months ago, South Korea had rumored that it would send senior military generals to Taiwan, but the personnel case was withdrawn due to other disputes.

Chung Byung-won, the former South Korean representative to Taiwan, was transferred to the post of ambassador to Sweden after only one year in Taiwan.

The post of representative in Taiwan will be taken over by Lee Yin-ho, director of the Strategic Material Management Institute (KOSTI), and will take up the post next Monday (20).

This is the first time that the Yin Xiyue government has dispatched personnel to Taiwan. Unlike the past, where diplomats or scholars are usually stationed in Taiwan, Lee Eun-ho came from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources and is familiar with international business affairs.

Lee Eun-ho is 62 years old this year. He has successively served as the chief of the International Standards Section of the Ministry of Industry and Resources, the chief of the E-commerce Exchange Section, the chief of the International Standards Section of the Institute of Technology and Standards, and the chief of the Northeast Asia Commerce Section of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources. He has been stationed in Vietnam and Arabia. The Grand Duchy of the United Kingdom also served as the head of the Pohang Geothermal Development Investigation and Support Team of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Energy. In 2020, he took over as the director of the Institute of Strategic Materials Management.

The Institute of Strategic Materials Management is related to export control. Its responsibilities are to grasp domestic and international trade security policies and sanctions trends, assist enterprises to comply with international trade norms, and provide various training and consulting services to ensure safe trade of import and export enterprises and promote national economic growth.

In November last year, Korean media reported that former South Korean Army Chief of Staff Kim Yong-woo was appointed as the new representative in Taiwan. However, this personnel case was withdrawn due to his involvement in the curriculum reform of the Army Academy.
