At least 31,643 people died in two strong earthquakes that shook southern Turkey last Monday, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) said today, quoted by Anadolu Agency.

The magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 earthquakes, with their epicenter in Kahramanmaras County, affected more than 13 million people in a total of 10 counties, including Adana, Adyaman, Diyarbekir, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kilis, Malatya, Osmaniye and Şanlıurfa.

Several countries in the region, including Syria and Lebanon, also felt the strong tremors that shook Turkey in less than 10 hours, BTA reported.
More than 238,459 search and rescue personnel are currently working in the field, AFAD said in a statement.
Almost 158,165 people have been evacuated so far from the earthquake-affected regions.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced today that a total of 9,793 foreign personnel from 74 countries are currently continuing search and rescue efforts on the ground.
