A murderer wanted for 26 years was accidentally caught by the German police at Düsseldorf airport, DPA reported.

The 44-year-old man had intended to fly to Barcelona when he was stopped for a random check, a police spokesman said.

An arrest warrant issued by Irish authorities in connection with drug-related offenses prevented him from boarding the plane.

After arousing the suspicions of the authorities, the police checked the man's fingerprints, which shed light on his more serious previous crimes.

According to a court ruling, the man, who is an Albanian citizen, shot a man in 1997 under a different name.

The Albanian government then issued an international warrant for his arrest.
