What a church holiday today, February 12

February 12 in the church calendar is

the day of commemoration of Basil the Great of Caesarea, Gregory the Theologian of Nazianzus and John Chrysostom (Trinity or the Council of the Three Saints)

.

It was started back in the 9th century, when there were heated discussions about which of the three ministers was more important.

During this dispute, they decided that they were all equal, and therefore became servants of the Trinity forever.

Bishop Ivan, on the instructions of the saints, combined all the days of remembrance of these saints into a single holiday.

The first mention of commemoration of the Cathedral of the Three Saints on February 12 dates back to 1076.

According to the old style, the holiday fell on January 30.

The three saints were born in Christian families, and therefore they are often associated with family holiness.

Basil the Great was the archbishop of Caesarea Cappadocia, a church writer and theologian.

Together with his friend Gregory the Theologian, he was the Cappadocian Church Father.

Ivan Zolotoust and Grigory the Theologian were archbishops of Constantinople and also theologians.
