"I saw footage of this disaster, the pain of these people who are suffering from the earthquake.

Francis (Latin: Franciscus PP.), until his election Jorge Mario Bergoglio - Pope of Rome since March 13, also said today that he was "disturbed and hurt" by the imprisonment of Nicaraguan bishop Rolando Alvarez, who was sentenced to more than 26 years in prison in the Latin American country, Reuters reported.

Ortega accused Catholic leaders of trying to oust him after protests that killed nearly 300 people in 2018. Since then, the former Marxist rebel's government has begun expelling Catholic nuns and missionaries.

Alvarez was convicted on Friday of treason, undermining the integrity of the nation and spreading fake news, among other charges, according to Reuters.
