According to UN estimates, the number of dead as a result of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria may increase at least twice and reach more than 50 thousand.

This was stated by UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths, Sky News reports.

It should be noted that at the time of publication of the material, more than 25,000 people died as a result of earthquakes.

"I think it's difficult to accurately estimate (the number of victims - ed.) because we still have to get under the rubble. But I'm sure the

number will double or even more. It's terrible

. It's deeply shocking... the thought that under these mountains of debris there are still people, some of them are still alive," Griffiths said.

He added that search and rescue operations in Turkey and Syria will soon be completed, because the ideal period for saving people is 72 hours.

"But they (rescuers - ed.) got someone alive an hour or two ago. It

will probably be incredibly difficult to decide when to stop this phase of the rescue

and move on to the next phase, which will also have its own problems," said the UN Deputy Secretary General.

We will remind, as of the evening of February 11, the number of victims of the earthquakes that shook Turkey and Syria on February 6 reached 25,401 people.

Another 80,104 people were injured.

Rescuers continue to search under the rubble for adults, children and animals.

In some places, the rescue stories are impressive, because babies of a few months and a few days who spent more than 100 hours there were taken alive from under the ruins.
