In Gaziantep, thousands of families sleep in their cars and in makeshift tents, beds are scarce in mosques and schools turned into shelters.

Residents of the Syrian city of Aleppo are in desperate need of heating - the cold threatens to claim more lives - this time among people left homeless.

Elbistan, the epicenter of the second powerful earthquake in Turkey, is surrounded by numerous small villages.

However, help does not arrive there or it is too slow because of the bad weather and the remoteness of the area.

In the snowy surroundings of the ghost town, people come to collect the aid straight from the vans.

Tragedy in Turkey and Syria: Earthquake death toll exceeds 16,000

Due to the lack of tents, cars are the only shelter for many.

Locals say aid only started arriving yesterday, trucks unable to reach villages in this part of southern Turkey.

President Erdogan continues his tour of the areas affected by the tragedy.

In Adyaman district, he announced that earthquake victims would be provided with rent assistance for one year.

According to Erdogan, priority will be given to the construction of new buildings.

His Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad made his first public appearance since the devastation.

He visited a hospital in Aleppo and condemned the Western response to the tremors.

Aid reaches Syria with great difficulty due to logistical problems, but also due to the fact that some of the most affected areas are controlled by the opposition.

The first trucks with humanitarian aid have already arrived there, but according to the Syrian civil defense "White Helmets" this is not special support, but part of the periodic deliveries of the UN.

The equipment desperately needed to pull people out from under the rubble never arrived.

"Let me describe the situation to you honestly - a real disaster. The UN must apologize to the Syrian people for the lack of support and for the disappointment it has caused by siding with the criminals in Syria, leaving people without food and shelter. To this day, they have not received no help," Raed al-Saleh, head of the Syrian Civil Defense, told BNT.

Because of the civil war, Syria is fragmented and many parts have long been difficult for international humanitarian organizations to access.

In the first days after the earthquake, supplies arrived from countries friendly to the Assad regime, such as Russia, Iran and the UAE.

But whole areas in northwestern Syria remain practically cut off, because humanitarian aid for them can only go through Turkey or through government-controlled territories.
