"Volunteering is very directly related to sustainable civil society, and civil society is a measure of the quality of life in a country," he added.

Manol Peykov announced that so far more than 850,000 BGN have been collected for the victims, and "the donations in question continue to flow in in an absolutely incredible way".

"The donors are thousands of people, all kinds of people - old, young, most of them have no family or ancestral connection with Turkey, they just sympathize," he added.

"It's very inspiring to see so much energy that is inspired by a desire to help," he pointed out.

Shadi Martini, a Syrian activist and volunteer, for his part expressed his admiration for the scale of the mobilization to help Syria and Turkey.

He stated that he was very pleasantly surprised.

"Bulgaria is not directly affected and I am pleasantly surprised. You can stay here and not give anything, but still people want, call, organize," said Shadi Martini.
