A car attacker ran over pedestrians in East Jerusalem, killing two and injuring five people, including small children, the AP reported, citing Israeli police.

This is another case of violence in the city.

The attack was carried out at a bus stop in Ramot, a Jewish settlement on the borders of East Jerusalem.

Tensions in this part of the city, which is annexed by Israel and claimed by the Palestinians as the capital of their future state, rose sharply after a Palestinian shot dead seven people there on January 27.

It was the deadliest attack in Jerusalem in more than a decade.

Police did not immediately identify the dead, but medics said they were treating six people, including two children in critical condition.

According to police data, they are respectively 5 and 6 years old.

Two victims are in a serious condition and unconscious, and the other two are in a moderately serious condition, added the cited medics.

Police said the attacker was shot dead by a police officer at the scene of the attack, AFP reported.

His identity was not immediately released.

According to the police, it is a terrorist act.

Israel considers all of Jerusalem its indivisible capital, and the Palestinians want the eastern part of the city, which was captured by Israel during the 1967 Middle East war, to be the capital of their future state, the AP said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a terrorist attack and ordered the reinforcement of security services and the arrest of people close to the suspected attacker, Reuters reported.
