Brazil's decision is a gesture toward closer ties with the Biden administration after U.S.-Brazilian relations soured under Lula da Silva's predecessor, former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.

Iranian ships are now authorized to dock at the port of Rio de Janeiro between February 26 and March 3 this year, Brazil's foreign ministry said.

According to a US official with direct knowledge of the situation, the prospect of Iranian warships docked in Rio de Janeiro before Lula da Silva's meeting with Biden would be something unpleasant they wanted to avoid.

There have been numerous informal talks at many different levels, the US representative said, adding that it was good news that the dates did not coincide.

Brazilian military sources confirmed that the Brazilian government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has set later dates, barring Iranian warships from docking in Rio de Janeiro now.
