Census is a national festival celebrated every ten years, in which every citizen living in every part of the country is included. Since 1871, every tenth year census was done in the country.

In this context, after the partition in 1947 and the independence of the country, the census conducted in 1951 was the ninth census in itself, but it was the first census after independence.

Not only did the partition bring many changes in the census, but it also changed the map of India and the ratio of Hindu-Muslim population in the country also changed.

February 9 has special significance in the history of independent India's census because on this day the work of making the list for the census was started.

1757:

Robert Clive included Calcutta (now Kolkata) from Sirajudaula to the British controlled area through Alinagar Treaty.

1951:

The work of making the list for the first census in independent India started.

1969:

The performance of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's Congress party was very poor in the assembly elections held in six states of the country.

1971:

The Apollo 14 spacecraft sent to the moon by the US space agency NASA returned to Earth after completing its mission.

1975:

Russian spacecraft Soyuz-17 returned to Earth after spending 29 days in space.

A plane carrying tourists to Dakar, the capital of Senegal, crashed.

In the darkness of the night, the pilot landed the plane on the queue of lights in the garden of a hotel just before the destination, thinking it as the airstrip of the plane floor.

Of the 59 people on board, 31 died.

2006:

On the holy day of Shia Muslims 'Ashura', 23 people died in a fidayeen attack in Hangu, Pakistan.

Later, due to the outbreak of riots between Shia and Sunni Muslims, the death toll reached 31.

2008:

Death of Baba Amte, who devoted his whole life for the welfare of leprosy patients.

2010:

The death toll in the severe earthquake in Haiti was officially announced to be 2,30,000.
