In Turkey and Syria, a massive earthquake that claimed more than 15,000 lives left entire settlements in ruins, and large cities turned into a pile of rubble.

It can be seen in the pictures obtained from the satellite that Antakya and Kahramanmaras in the southern part are among the most affected areas, where many high-rise buildings have been destroyed.

Satellite images also show that hundreds of emergency shelters have been set up in open areas and stadiums to speed up relief operations.

Turkey's Gaziantep city of about two million was hit by the first earthquake on Monday, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, and was followed by another 7.5 and several smaller earthquakes.

According to the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, the tremors were felt even in Greenland.

The greatest devastation occurred on the strip between Kahramanmaras and Gaziantep, where entire settlements were reduced to rubble.

According to Turkey, more than 3,000 buildings have collapsed in seven provinces, including government hospitals.

A historic 13th century mosque has also partially collapsed.

The death toll in the earthquake has reached 15,383, of which 12,391 people have lost their lives in Turkey, while 2,992 people have died in war-ravaged Syria.

There is a possibility of increasing the death toll, because the relief work is still going on.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), two crore 30 lakh people are expected to be affected due to this earthquake.

WHO also informed that 77 national and 13 international emergency medical teams are being deployed in the affected areas.

India has also sent tons of relief material to Turkey and Syria.
