[Reporter Zheng Mingxiang/Taipei Report] Turkey was hit by a century-old earthquake, and more than 5,000 buildings across the country collapsed. It once again warned Taiwan, which is also in the earthquake zone, especially Taipei City, which has many old buildings, that the consequences of a strong earthquake may be unimaginable. In this regard, Taipei Mayor Jiang Wanan said today that the Ministry of the Interior has pointed out that if an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 or above occurs in Taipei City, more than 4,000 buildings will collapse.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale occurred at the junction of southern Turkey and northern Syria at 4:17 a.m. local time on the 6th, with a focal depth of only 17.9 kilometers. It was the largest earthquake in the region in a century.

According to official statistics, at least 4,372 people died in Turkey and Syria in the strong earthquake, and at least 5,606 buildings collapsed in Turkey.

In Taipei City, 70% of the houses are over 30 years old, and many buildings have insufficient earthquake resistance coefficients. If a strong earthquake occurs, the consequences will be unimaginable. Therefore, issues related to the reconstruction of the elderly and urban renewal were the focus of all parties during the Taipei mayoral election last year.

Jiang Wanan attended the meeting of principals of public and private elementary schools in Taipei City in the second semester today. After the meeting, he said in an interview that in the past, the Ministry of the Interior pointed out that if an earthquake with a magnitude of 6 or above occurs in Taipei City, more than 4,000 buildings will collapse. I am very concerned about issues such as the earthquake resistance coefficient of related buildings in Taipei City, and have asked various bureaus and divisions to plan and accelerate the promotion of the overall future reconstruction of Taipei City and the reconstruction of dangerous old people.
