The territory of Ukraine

is located near a powerful seismically active belt

that stretches across the Mediterranean Sea, the Caucasus, and the Idokush, and then splits into two separate belts.

In Ukraine

, there is less chance that strong earthquakes can happen often

, but such countries as Georgia, Armenia, Cyprus, Turkey, Syria are territorially located exactly in the belt where earthquakes can happen more often.

Oleksandr Kendzera, director of the Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, told

TSN.ua

about this .

"For Kyiv, we have historical data for almost a thousand years about how earthquakes were felt on its territory. It cannot be said that Kyiv is threatened by earthquakes of such a scale as in Turkey. But there are others that can be dangerous. In particular, those earthquakes taking place in part of the Vranca zone belt in Romania," Kendzera said.

He explained that the foci of these earthquakes are formed at a very deep depth - about 140-180 kilometers.

They are very powerful.

In terms of strength, it is even more than those that took place in Turkey.

"Due to the fact that these earthquakes have a deep focus, the

seismic waves slowly fade away and reach Kyiv

, Moscow and St. Petersburg with enough intensity, leaving cracks and destruction, and if the seismic waves resonate, there

may be great destruction

," he said. Oleksandr Kendzera.

As a reminder, Ukraine is located on the northern edge of the seismically active belt, where the devastating earthquake occurred in Turkey.

The most powerful earthquakes in Ukraine are possible in the southwest of Odesa region.
