International Safe Internet Day or Safe Internet Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday of February in more than 100 countries.

The initiative, which began in 2004, has the objective of promoting the safe, responsible and positive use of the Internet, especially among children and young people, the most vulnerable to the risks of digital technologies.

According to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, the digital environment can include biased information, gender, discriminatory, racist, violent and exploitative stereotypes, which encourage hate speech with misinformation.

Although digital technologies can be tools to promote creativity, knowledge and communication in the youngest, it is necessary to master strategies and methods to navigate in the safest way.

Some tips to surf the internet in a protected way are:

–Avoid contact with strangers, who are not part of the family or social circle.

–Do not provide confidential information, such as address, telephone numbers, photographs or passwords.

–Immediately delete suspicious emails or messages.

–Ask the elderly for help, especially the closest relatives, who can better advise on the proper use of the internet.
