The BBC writes about it.

The death toll, which currently stands at more than 4,200

, has risen rapidly since the first earthquake struck early Monday morning.

About 12 hours later, a second strong shock occurred in the north.

Rescuers combed mountains of debris in the freezing cold and snow to find survivors.

Countries around the world are sending support to help rescue efforts, including specialist teams, sniffer dogs and equipment.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.8-magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9 km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.

Seismologists said the first earthquake was one of the strongest ever recorded in Turkey.

Survivors said the shaking stopped within two minutes.

The second earthquake, caused by the first, had a magnitude of 7.5, and its epicenter was located in the Elbistan region of Kahramanmarash province.

Many aftershocks are still felt in the region.

The number of dead and wounded from both Turkey and Syria rose sharply during Monday.

The WHO has warned that the numbers are likely to rise eightfold as rescuers find more victims under the rubble.

"Unfortunately, with earthquakes we always see the same thing, which is that the initial reports of the number of dead or injured will increase significantly next week," said the WHO's senior emergency specialist in Europe.

This was reported by Catherine Smallwood to AFP.

Let's add that a seismologist from the Netherlands predicted a devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

In Syria, the sister of the country's Prime Minister Husein Arnous died as a result of the earthquake.
