Supreme Court hearing in the case of Laxman Chandra Victoria Gauri today

The Supreme Court on Monday reconsidered the request for an urgent hearing on a petition challenging the appointment of lawyer Laxman Chandra Victoria Gauri as a judge in the Madras High Court and decided to hear it on February 7 instead of February 10.

A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala took note of the fresh mentioning of the matter by senior advocate Raju Ramachandran.

Advocate Ramachandran informed the court about the Centre's notification appointing Gauri as an additional judge.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice said, "Since we have taken cognizance of the developments, we can list it tomorrow morning."

We can constitute a bench.

Earlier, the top court had agreed to hear on February 10 the petition challenging Gauri's appointment.

The Centre's notification appointing a total of 11 advocates and two judicial officers as Additional Judges in the High Courts of Allahabad, Karnataka and Madras came in the public domain after the matter was mentioned for the first time in the proceedings.

One of the judges to be appointed to the Madras High Court is advocate Laxman Chandra Victoria Gauri, whose alleged affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has sparked controversy.

The proposal to elevate a woman lawyer representing the Center before the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court reportedly became controversial after news about her alleged affiliation with the BJP surfaced.

Some statements of the lawyer against Muslims and Christians have come to the fore.
