Tremors of 5.9 magnitude earthquake have been felt in Turkey (symbolic photo)

Washington:

After the most powerful earthquake in decades in Turkey, the scene is extremely frightening.

The houses of thousands of people have become razed.

Carrying the victims a little further, a line of cars crawled north through the shattered city of Sanliurfa.

On the opposite side of the road, a distraught family is walking in the freezing rain, looking for shelter to spend the night….

Sanliurfa, one of the big cities in south-eastern Turkey, was heavily affected by the earthquake.

The powerful earthquake has killed at least 3,800 people in the mostly Kurdish region and neighboring Syria.

The disaster flattened nearly 3,500 buildings in 10 provinces, injured more than 11,000 people, and left an unknown number trapped under the rubble.

Rescue teams are currently focused on one of Sanliurfa's main streets, trying to pull out survivors from a seven-story building that has turned into a pile of rubble.

At least 30 people were reported dead in the province, where a 7.8-magnitude pre-dawn tremor and a series of aftershocks toppled 200 buildings.

A 20-year-old Syrian student who lives nearby said, "There is a family I know under the rubble. Until 11 a.m., my friend was answering the phone. But he didn't answer anymore. He's down. I think Maybe his phone's battery is dead."

But it's no easy task, before him lie the mutilated remains of a sofa, a chair with broken metal legs and some tattered curtains, all vestiges of a quiet, simple life left behind.

Dozens of people tried to lift large chunks of concrete debris that immediately showed signs of life.

He would pause in silence, peering into the wreckage filled with a mixture of weariness, pain and hope.

Omar said that he and his friends would stay here all night, no matter what the rain and cold.

"I have to," he said.

So far more than four thousand people have died in the severe earthquake in Turkey and Syria.

Many countries including India have joined hands to help the earthquake affected countries.

A few hours after the announcement made by the Indian Prime Minister's Office (PMO), India dispatched the first consignment of earthquake relief material to Turkey through an Indian Air Force aircraft.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, it was said that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and medical teams with relief material would be sent to Turkey in coordination with the government of the Republic of Turkey.

This includes specialized search and rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), including male and female personnel, dog squads, medical supplies, advanced 'drilling' equipment and other critical equipment required for the relief effort.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted, "India's Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) is ready. NDRF search and rescue teams, trained dog squads, medical supplies, 'drilling' machines and other essential equipment for earthquake relief." The first consignment of material left for Turkey.
