A devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 was registered tonight at 3:17 Bulgarian time on the border between Turkey and Syria, near the cities of Adana and Aleppo.

The earthquake was realized along the East Anatolian fault, which is one of the most active seismic sources in the region, subjected to continuous pressure from the Arabian and African plates, reported seismologists from the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NIGGG- BAS).

A few minutes after the main earthquake, two strong aftershocks (aftershocks) with magnitudes 6.7 and 5.6 were registered, which caused even more destruction and panic in the affected region.

The wave of aftershocks continues at the moment, informs from NIGGG-BAN.

Today's earthquake is more than 30 times stronger than the earthquake recorded three years ago, on January 24, 2020, on the eastern part of this fault, which killed 40 and injured more than 1,600.

Resident of Turkey: A noise was heard underground before the earthquake

The map, source www.gfz-potsdam.de, shows the distribution of earthquakes in the region of the Aegean and Anatolian microplates, as well as the magnitude and direction of the recorded movements as a result of the stresses experienced in the region, explain the seismologists from NIGG-BAN.

Hundreds died after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southeast Turkey and northwest Syria.
