At least 670 people have been killed, according to the latest figures, in Syria and Turkey as a result of a powerful earthquake near the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep early this morning, world agencies reported.

The Syrian Ministry of Health, quoted by France Presse, confirmed the death of at least 239 people in areas under the control of President Bashar al-Assad.

The number of injured there reached 648.

In the rebel-controlled areas in the northern provinces of Idlib and Aleppo, the death of 147 people has already been confirmed, AFP reported, citing the "White Helmets".

The volunteer organization, which operates in rebel areas, also reported more than 340 wounded.

Many of the buildings in the areas that were affected by the earthquake suffered damage during the conflict that broke out nearly 12 years ago in Syria, notes Reuters.
