Olaf Scholz

Olaf Scholz is a German politician from the Social Democratic Party (GSDP).

Since December 2021, he was among the hundreds attending today's funeral of the two young men killed in an attack on a train last month, DPA reported.

The funeral in the city of Neumünster was also attended by residents and representatives of the local authorities.

The victims, schoolboys aged 17 and 19, died after being stabbed by a 33-year-old stateless Palestinian who arrived in Germany in 2014. The attack appeared to have been carried out randomly on January 25 in Brokstadt.

"We will never accept something like this happening in our country," Scholz said before the funeral service.

According to him, two young people became innocent victims of a completely insane act.

The perpetrator is in custody on charges of murder and attempted murder.

In the attack on the train traveling from Kiel to Hamburg, another five people were injured, three of them seriously.

Regarding the debate over the return to the home countries of asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected, Scholz said that those who cannot obtain protection in Germany should return to their countries of origin.

"This is fundamental to guaranteeing asylum," he said.

"I will also do everything I can to make sure that this is not just a German effort, but that we in Europe act together on this issue," the chancellor said.
