In the eyes of Nimmi (name changed) from Morigaon district of Assam, the joy of becoming a mother is not visible, but the feeling of fear, insecurity and worry about the difficulties that will be faced in the future.

At the same time, there is an emptiness in the eyes of Regina Khatoon (name changed).

She is just engrossed in the thought that why a mountain of sorrows broke down on her, which has shaken her happy world.

Nimmi is one of the thousands of child brides whose husbands have been arrested by the Assam Police as part of a state-wide campaign against child marriage that has been going on for the last two days.

At the same time, Regina's son had a love marriage with a minor, due to which he is now behind bars.

Police have arrested 2,258 people till Saturday as part of the campaign against child marriage, including Hindu priests and Muslim clerics who conducted marriages.

Police said that a list of a total of 8,000 accused has been prepared.

In less than a fortnight after the state cabinet decided on January 23 to arrest those accused of child marriage and launch a massive drive and awareness campaign against the practice, the police have registered 4,074 cases of child marriage.

Nimmi told 'PTI-Bhasha', "There was a knock on the door at around 2 am on Thursday.

17-year-old Nimmi was in love with Gopal Biswas (name changed).

She got married to 20-year-old Gopal about a year ago.

Both started their family.

Gopal was living by selling pakodas and other dishes at the village square.

The names of the affected people have been changed for their safety.

Gopal's elder brother Yudhishthira (name changed) also lives in the same area with his old parents.

He said, “We can barely make ends meet for our family.

How will we be able to take care of Nimmi and her son?

She has become somewhat delirious.

Hardly eats anything.

The child has also fallen ill.” Regina's son Rajibul Hussain (name changed) was caught from his house at around 6 am on Thursday.

A few minutes before this, he had returned home from Kerala with his father taking his sick uncle.

Regina said that no one is ready to listen.

He claimed, "My daughter-in-law's age is not less than the age of marriage, but due to some mistake in the Aadhaar card, my son is now in jail."

She has gone to her parental home, which is just a short distance away, to get her birth certificate." A neighbor of Regina's claimed that many girls, like Rajibul's wife, were not actually minors at the time of marriage, but had Aadhaar cards. He claimed, “The police have taken the age data mostly from local health workers, who have information on the basis of Aadhaar cards.

Now, we are helping these girls to get the original birth records, so that their husbands can get bail.

Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma has said that the campaign against child marriage will continue till the next assembly elections to be held in 2026.

According to the National Family Health Survey, maternal and infant mortality rates are high in Assam and child marriage is the root cause for this, as an average of 31 per cent of registered marriages in the state took place in the prohibited age group.
