(Central News Agency) Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Saturday that a serious accident at a high-voltage substation caused widespread power outages in the southern port city of Odesa and nearby areas.

"The situation is difficult to handle, the scale of the incident is so large that it is impossible to immediately restore power supply, especially to critical infrastructure," Shmigar said in a message on the social platform Telegram, Reuters reported.

The message said that the substation in Odessa had been damaged many times before by Russian missile attacks.

The Energy Minister is currently on his way to Odessa, the capital of the Odessa region, to oversee the repair work with the chief executive of the state energy company.

Shmigar said authorities were working to restore power to critical infrastructure as well as to apartment complexes where residents needed electricity for heating.

Odessa is a major port city on the Black Sea in southern Ukraine, with a population of 1 million before the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The local temperature is 2 degrees Celsius today and is expected to drop below zero for much of next week.

Shmigal said he had ordered Ukraine's energy ministry to urgently ship all available high-power generators in the country's stockpile to Odessa within a day.

He also ordered the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request Turkey to send an electric ship with power generation equipment to assist Odessa in restoring power.
