Cuban judoka Maylín del Toro (63 kg)
today won the bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Paris,
one of the strongest tournaments on the international circuit of that sport.
In that event for the Greater Antilles, another five Cubans left today, but they did not manage to advance to decisive instances.
Maylín, number 33 in the world ranking,
won the bronze medal after defeating the Canadian Catherine Beauchemin-Pinard, second in the global ranking and current world runner-up.
However, in that match, del Toro maintained absolute dominance and in less than a minute achieved the
ippon
that not only led her to her first podium of the year on the
IJF World Tour
, but
also secured her valuable points for the Olympic qualification list.
The Creole reached the discussion of third place
after losing in the semifinals against the Japanese Nami Nabekura, number 17 in the world ranking defending champion of the Grand Slam in Paris.
In that fight both got involved beyond the regulation time, with the Cuban on the brink of disqualification for
Hansoku Make.
However, when she seemed to have more options, the Asian took advantage of a mistake in posture and got a clear ippon in her favor.
Before that lawsuit, El Toro
enjoyed three victories in a row against rivals of proven quality and that surpass her in the world ranking.
In her debut, she defeated the Hungarian Szofi Ozbas, owner of the 12th seat, world youth titleholder of 2019 and European bronze of 2022, in just 50 seconds.
Then, she needed to apply much more to
score a
wazari
in extended time against the Portuguese Bárbara Timo
, 10th in the ranking, world tanned the previous year, runner-up in 2019 and champion in Paris two seasons ago.
After that victory, she had the Israeli Inbal Shemesh in the quarterfinals, the one in charge of removing the British Lucy Renshall, current leader of the universal list, out of the way.
Facing Shemesh —15th in the ranking— the Creole also found victory
after the regulation four minutes of combat, after getting a
wazari
that led her to the direct discussion of the medals.
Of the rest of the Cubans present in this first day,
the only one who achieved victories was Arnaes Odelín in the 57 kg
.
After being
bye
in the first round, the Caribbean defeated
the Georgian Mariam Tsikhelashvili by
ippon .
However, she later fell that same way before the Japanese Haruka Funakubo, second in the world ranking and subtitle of the world in 2022.
For their part, it drew attention that, except for the defeat by
wazari awasete ippon
of the young Blanca Cabrera (52 kg) against the Australian Tinka Easton,
the rest of the Cubans gave up in their first start due to accumulation of penalties.
This was the case with Orlando Polanco (66 kg) against the Kazakh Gusman Kyrgyzbaev, with Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) against the Mongolian Uranbayar Odgerel and with Zamarit Gregorio (48 kg) against the Spanish Gemma María Gómez.
For this Sunday
, Cuba focuses its hopes on the performance of Iván Felipe Silva in the 90 kg
, although Jorge Martínez (81 kg), Liester Cardona (100 kg) and Idelannis Gómez (70 kg) will also climb the tatami.

Meanwhile,
Luis Alberto Orta (67 kg) also won a bronze medal at the Zagreb Greco-Roman Wrestling Grand Prix, his second tournament of the year.
The Cuban Olympic holder of the 60 kg disputed the third place of the tournament against the Finn Elmer Joakim Mattila, a man above all with discreet results in tournaments for youth and Europeans among children under 23 years of age and who
now fell with a 4-2 score in his against.
Orta did not have an easy ride,
although he successfully cleared it from his first outing in the preliminary round.
There he defeated Indian Singh Karanjit by superiority 9-1, the most discreet of his rivals in Zagreb.
Then, the level grew ostensibly and in the round of 16 he found Azeri Hasrat Jafarov, world youth and under-23 world title holder in 2021, as well as universal and European bronze in the senior tournament last season.
However, against a rival of that lineage
, the Cuban took advantage of each of the opportunities and finally dominated the match with a score of 5-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
There, once again, he faced an under-23 world champion, but as happened in the previous match, the Iranian Seyed Danial Seyed Shamsollah Sohrabi lost 2-6 to the Cuban Olympic champion.
With these good victories, the Caribbean reached the semifinals to face the Chinese Husiyuetu Husiyuetu,
a 28-year-old man who barely had ninth place in the World Championship last year as his best performance.
However, after closing the first set with a 4-0 lead, Orta was unable to stop the Asian's push and received a string of 13 points, achieved consecutively thanks to constant imbalances.
For this Sunday
in Cuba, the world multi-medalist Oscar Pino (130 kg) will take to the canvas
, who will face Uzbek Temurbek Nasimov, world bronze under-20 years old in 2022, directly in the round of 16.
