A 34-year-old medic, who saved thousands of lives around the world, died in Ukraine while helping to evacuate civilians.

His car was hit by a rocket in Bakhmut, the eastern city that has become the center of fierce fighting, reports the British publication "Guardian", reports bTV. 

According to the "Kievski Nezamisim" newspaper, five people were injured in the shelling.

In recent weeks, Bakhmut and the neighboring town of Soledar have been at the center of intense shelling and ground attacks by Russian troops and Wagner group mercenaries.

In late 2015, at the height of the global "war on terror" against the Islamic State (IS), Reed left to begin medical training operations in northern Iraq.

It led him to lead medical teams among the Kurdish peshmerga forces.

Reid also worked for Iraqi special forces during the battle for Mosul, which is trying to retake the Iraqi city from Islamic State.

During his time as a medic in Iraq, Reed treated more than 10,000 patients at various trauma stabilization sites.

Among them there are both elderly people and small children.

Reid is the co-founder and president of Global Response Management (GRM), a veteran-led international medical non-governmental organization that provides emergency care on various front lines.

With it, he participated in emergency operations in Iraq, Yemen, Syria and Poland.

"He was one of the good crazy people. He was selflessly putting himself in danger all the time to help other people," Chandler Reed told Fox News.
