Guwahati:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the deprived and backward classes will be given priority in the government's efforts for the development of the nation.

During his digital address at 'Krishnaguru Eknam Akhand Kirtan' in Assam's Barpeta district, Modi also said that to empower women, special provisions have been made in the Union Budget 2023-24 to increase the interest rate on women's savings.

He said, “The Mahila Samman Savings Certificate has been started to make women's income a means of their empowerment.

This will benefit many people in Assam, Nagaland and Tripura and will bring new opportunities for them.”

The Prime Minister said Assam and the Northeast were "deprived" of connectivity and development for decades, but during the last eight years the government has focused on the welfare of the region.

Modi said, “Provisions have been made in the budget for better tourism facilities, modern infrastructure, digital connectivity and these will greatly benefit the people of the Northeast.”

He said that the traditional skills of the artisans of the region are now being recognized globally and the central government will set up a 'Unity Mall' in each state, where traditional products will be displayed.

Modi said that such products of the region will also be displayed at important tourist places.

The Prime Minister was wearing a white and green 'gamosa' (gamcha).

He said that the demand for handmade traditional Gamosa has increased in the last eight years.

Modi said, “Lakhs of women organized under Self Help Groups (SHGs) are weaving these.

The women of Assam have worked hard to weave each 'gamosa'."

The kirtan which started on January 6 at Krishnaguru Sevashram will continue for a month.
