The results of the elections for five seats of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council were announced on Friday, out of which four seats have gone to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) account, while one seat has been won by an independent. .

With this, the hopes of the opposition Samajwadi Party to get the status of Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House of the Legislature have been shattered.

It is noteworthy that the voting in three graduate and two teacher constituencies of the Legislative Council was held on January 30 and the counting of votes started on Thursday evening and concluded on Friday. 


Counting of votes took place in Bareilly, Jhansi, Gorakhpur and Kanpur districts.

The counting of votes for the graduate constituency in Moradabad also took place in Bareilly. 

The SP has nine members in the Upper House (Legislative Council) and one more member was needed to get the status of Leader of the Opposition in the State Upper House.

In the 403-member assembly in Uttar Pradesh, the main opposition SP has the required numbers and its chief Akhilesh Yadav is the Leader of the Opposition. 

Reacting to the victory of the BJP candidates in the Legislative Council elections, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted and congratulated the winners and said, "Hearty congratulations to all the candidates who won the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections!

This victory of the BJP candidates in the elections to the Upper House of the State Legislature is a symbol of immense public trust in the double engine government led by respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said, “The presence of hardworking members who have deep faith in democratic values ​​will enhance the dignity of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

The BJP has won the seats of Gorakhpur-Faizabad Mandal Graduate Constituency, Allahabad-Jhansi Mandal Teachers Constituency, Bareilly-Moradabad Mandal Graduate Constituency and Kanpur Mandal Graduate Constituency. 

Independent candidate Raj Bahadur Singh Chandel won from Kanpur Mandal Teacher's constituency.

With this victory, the number of BJP members increased to 79 in the 100-member Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. 

BJP's Devendra Pratap Singh defeated his nearest SP rival by a margin of 17,455 votes from Gorakhpur-Faizabad graduate constituency.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is the MLA from Gorakhpur Nagar seat. 

Allahabad (Prayagraj) – In Jhansi teacher's constituency, BJP's Babulal Tiwari defeated his nearest rival Suresh Tripathi of Teachers Association by a margin of 1403 votes. 

In Bareilly-Moradabad graduate constituency, BJP's Jaipal Singh Busy defeated his nearest rival Shiv Pratap Singh Yadav of SP by a margin of 51,257 votes.

Jaipal Singh Busy got 92,771 votes. 

BJP's Arun Pathak secured 62,601 votes in the Kanpur graduate constituency, defeating his nearest rival Kamlesh Yadav by 9,316 votes.

Independent candidate Raj Bahadur Singh Chandel got 5,229 votes from Kanpur teachers' constituency and defeated his nearest rival Hemraj Meena by 1,548 votes. 

A total of 63 candidates including BJP, SP and Independents were in the fray on these five seats of the Legislative Council.

These included 44 candidates from three graduate constituencies and 19 candidates from two teachers' constituencies.

Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) did not field their candidates in this election. 

43.19 percent in Gorakhpur-Faizabad division graduate constituency, 40.93 percent in Kanpur division graduate constituency, 53.72 percent in Bareilly-Moradabad division graduate constituency, 75.86 percent in Allahabad-Jhansi division teachers constituency and 68.93 percent in Kanpur division teachers constituency Voting took place. 

The districts where polling was held for these constituencies are Prayagraj, Kaushambi, Fatehpur, Banda, Chitrakoot, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jalaun, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Badaun, Rampur, Moradabad, Amroha, Bijnor, Sambhal, Bahraich, Shravasti, Gonda, Balrampur, Basti, Siddharthnagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Deoria, Kushinagar, Azamgarh, Mau, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Amethi and Ambedkar Nagar were included. 

Bahujan Samaj Party, Apna Dal (Sonelal), Nishad Party, Jansatta Dal Loktantrik have one seat each in the Legislative Council.
