Resumption of direct flights between Georgia and Russia will put companies serving Russian companies at Georgian airports under the threat of sanctions.

The Georgia office of APA informs that the US State Department informed "Voice of America" about this.

It was noted that a number of Western countries, including the United States, have banned Russian aircraft from entering their airspace, and continuing direct flights in such a situation would be a cause for concern.

"The entire West has distanced itself from the brutal regime - now is not the time to increase ties with Russia," the department said in a statement.

It should be noted that on January 19, the chairman of the ruling "Georgian Dream" party of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that it is possible to resume direct flights with Russia and that this could be useful for the citizens of Georgia.

He noted that such a decision of the Russian side can be welcomed.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishbili has stated that she is against the continuation of direct flights.

It should be noted that direct flights between Russia and Georgia were suspended by the order of Russian President Vladimir Putin after the anti-Russian protests in Tbilisi in the summer of 2019.
