The Greek government led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Kyriakos Mitsotakis - Greek economist and politician. Mitsotakis, born in Athens on March 4, 1968, wants to keep a far-right political party out of the parliamentary vote later this year with a legislative initiative that has received support from many parties, AP reported, quoted by BTA.

42-year-old Ilias Kasidiaris founded the Greek National Party two years ago.

He is currently serving a 13-year and six-month prison sentence for membership of a criminal organization as a former leading member of Golden Dawn, a political party with neo-Nazi origins linked to numerous street attacks and acts of violence.

Parliament on Friday published a proposed legal amendment that would disqualify Kasidiaris' party from running in the election on the grounds that its leader has been convicted of serious crimes and that the party will not "serve the free functioning of Greece's democratic constitution."

MPs are due to vote on the amendment on Tuesday.

Opposition parties support the ban, but the Greek Communist Party described the criteria in the amendment as too broad and open to abuse for political purposes.

"Democracies have a moral obligation to protect themselves from their enemies," center-right Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis – Greek economist and politician Mitsotakis was born in Athens on March 4, 1968 to members of his cabinet on Thursday.

"They cannot legitimize and certainly cannot finance organizations that openly work to undermine them," the Greek prime minister said.

Ahead of general elections expected in April, opinion polls suggest the Hellenic National Party will pass the three percent threshold needed to gain parliamentary representation.

In a phone message from a prison in central Greece, Kasidiaris called the legal amendment "undemocratic."
