Near the coast of the village of Atlit in Haifa (Israel), the once successful settlement of Atlin Yan, which was wiped off the face of the Earth thousands of years ago by a powerful tsunami, is under the water column.

IFL Science writes about it.

Underwater archaeologists began excavations in this area in 1960, only after almost a quarter of a century, marine archaeologist Dr. Ehud Galili and his team came across the remains of a settlement buried under the water column.

It was in 1984 - since then, researchers continue to unravel the secrets of the place, which was called Atlit Yang.

The remains of a huge Neolithic coastal settlement, which existed almost 9,000 years ago, are located at a depth of about 10 meters under water.

By the time the devastating tsunami hit the city, it was much higher than the current sea level and boasted very fertile land for agriculture.

The total area of the excavations of Atlin Yang today occupies about 40 thousand square meters.

Marine archaeologists have already discovered here ancient houses, wells, graves, as well as rectangular stone structures, which probably served as pens for livestock and divided the fields that were cultivated.

In addition, scientists discovered 65 human remains here, most of which were buried in single graves.

Earlier it became known that in the waters of the Sukošan Sea, near the coast of Croatia, researchers discovered a preserved

 2,000-year-old

ship .
