Against the sanctioned 35745 posts of veterinarians, 9090 posts are vacant in various states and union territories of the country.

The government gave this information to the Parliament on Friday.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Parshottam Rupala said, “Animal husbandry, along with veterinary science, is a state subject.

Therefore, public employment of veterinary doctors as per their requirement is the responsibility of the state government.

He said that as per the information received by the States/UTs, the sanctioned posts of veterinarians across the country as on January 31, 2023 are 35,745, while the vacant posts are 9,090.

Rupala further added, “While no reports of large scale animal deaths due to lack of veterinary services/facilities have been received from the States, reports of animal deaths affected by Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) have been reported in FY 2022- Received during 23.
