What a church holiday today, February 2

February 2 in the church calendar is

the day of memory of St. Euthymius the Great

.

Saint Euthymius lived in the 5th century and was highly respected among people for his benevolence.

For a long time, his mother and father could not conceive a child.

After long prayers, God still gave them a son, whom they named Euthymius.

It happened in 377.

When Euthymius was only 3 years old, his father died.

The mother decided to send the boy to the city monastery for education.

And that's why, already in adolescence, Euthymius thought about serving the Lord.

In adulthood, he wanted a lonely life.

He went to the desert and prayed there every day.

Later he built a new monastery.

For this, the Lord endowed him with healing power.

People gather together to see if the groundhog will see his shadow when he leaves his house.

This is how they try to predict the weather.

Although the forecasts of this "weatherman" should not be trusted, the holiday is quite funny and worth paying attention to.

And February 2 is celebrated as

World Wetlands Day

.

This event was launched with the signing of the 1971 Wetlands Convention in Iran.

The purpose of the holiday is to preserve the territories where waterfowl live.

World Hawaiian Guitar Day

is also celebrated on February 2

.

It was celebrated for the first time in 2011.

This is an international holiday (World Ukulele Day) dedicated to this miniature musical instrument that has a unique sound.

The homeland of the Hawaiian guitar (ukulele) is considered to be the Portuguese region of Madeira, where it was first produced.

It happened in the 19th century.

The original guitar was brought to the Hawaiian Islands by Portuguese immigrants at the end of the 19th century.

Local residents began to call it "ukulele", which means "jumping flea".

This instrument became especially popular during the reign of King Kalakaua.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the ukulele became one of the main instruments used in jazz music.

In 1915, this musical instrument became famous throughout the world during a music festival in San Francisco.

And February 2 is

Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Day

.

The event was founded in 2013 at the initiative of an international organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis.

Sled Dog Day

is

celebrated every year on February 2 .

For a long time, they were the only means of transporting goods and people in harsh weather conditions in the Arctic regions.

It is not known when and by whom this holiday was founded.

But on this very day in 1925, in the small town of Nome (Alaska), the weather blocked all roads, and a diphtheria epidemic broke out among the population.

Thanks to the sled dogs, they were able to deliver the serum on time and save people's lives.
