Romania still has a chance to quickly join Schengen, provided that President Klaus Iohannis and the government of Nicolae Czauka make a plan for negotiations, says MEP Dacian Cholos from the party "Renewing Romania's European Project" (REPER).

"In my opinion, we have a chance to enter Schengen by the summer, during the Swedish presidency of the Council of the EU, if the Romanian government and the president step up.

It is not enough to make public statements and wait for the other countries that opposed the accession to change their position.

There has to be a plan.

Maybe it exists, but I haven't seen it yet," Cholos commented, quoted by the Ziare website.

The Netherlands has confirmed its support for Romania's entry into Schengen

He appeals to the head of state of Romania to be active at the European Council next week, where the issue of migration will be discussed, BTA adds.

The Romanian President: 2023 should be the year of accession to Schengen

"This will be an important bet for Romania.

I believe that President Iohannis should play an active role and ensure that the necessary framework is created through the conclusions reached in the Council so that Austria and the Netherlands, who have so far been opposed, have the necessary elements to then support the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to Schengen.

Obviously, this advice will not be enough, but it may be a piece of the puzzle that needs to be put in order to make a decision as quickly as possible," Cholos adds.
